- Kathleen Dettman - Director
Kathleen Dettman is the Director of Institutional Research at the University of California Office of the President. She has over 30 years experience working in the University of California in various capacities. After graduating from UC Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Biology she went on to work for seven years as an academic researcher at UCSC's Long Marine Lab. From there she moved into institutional research and academic administration at UCSC, where she eventually assumed direct oversight of campus academic planning, faculty recruitment and the academic budget. During her tenure at UCSC, she broadened her perspective on institutional policy and data reporting while working directly on issues ranging from financial aid, compensation and budget policy to facilities and capital planning, long-range development planning and enrollment management.
Kathleen also led the implementation of institutional, budget, planning and other decision support systems and reporting in efforts to increase the effectiveness of business processes across the institution, as well as the responsiveness of information systems. She instituted and later directed the Data Management Services unit, charged with the development and integration of electronic databases and reporting strategies, which were customized for targeted campus and external constituencies. These efforts included development of policies and procedures regarding data security, access, integrity, definitions, standards, consistency and naming conventions. - Sarah Goodheart - Administrative Specialist
Sarah Goodheart is the Administrative Specialist supporting the Institutional Research (IR) department and splits her time between IR and IMPAC, Issues Management, Policy Analysis & Coordination. Working in a business environment since 2000, Sarah supported senior executives in a small team setting at Fleet/ Bank of America and Wellington Management Company, LLP, a Boston asset manager. Sarah began with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) in May 2009 shortly after relocating from Boston to California. In her role in IR, Sarah will continue to focus on the set-up and administrative maintenance of this department, including calendaring, meeting coordination, purchasing, and budget issues. Sarah is currently the administrative contact for the StatFinder website, and is slated for future project work on Sharepoint and other departmental applications. - Sam Agronow
Dr. Sam Agronow is the Deputy Director of Institutional Research at the University of California Office of the President. He has served in institutional research positions in California for over 25 years, both in K-12 as well as higher education, including positions at the Riverside County Office of Education, the University of California Santa Barbara, Samuel Merritt College and most recently the University of California Berkeley. He has just completed a term as the President of the California Association for Institutional Research. He has a B.A. mathematics from New York University, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in social psychology/research methods from Wayne State University in Detroit. His area of specialization is in undergraduate admissions research and evaluation, including outcomes assessment and program evaluation. He oversees the construction and maintenance of UC StatFinder which provides statistics on undergraduate admission, new undergraduate enrollment, persistence, and graduation. - Rosemary Chengson
Rosemary Chengson has over 15 years of experience with the University of California, 12 of which were with UCOP in the departments of Financial Management, Systemwide Budget and Business Operations prior to joining Institutional Research. Her role is to provide data analysis and reporting in the areas of finance, budget and academic personnel. Rosemary is a graduate of UC Berkeley and has an MBA from the University of Rochester. - Shelley Dommer
Shelley Dommer provides analytical and data management support for information related to Human Resources at the University of California. With over 25 years of UC experience at both Office of the President and the Berkeley campus Shelley has expertise in all the major areas of Human Resources including Health & Welfare, UCRS, Labor Relations as well as the University Payroll/Personnel System. - Charles Drucker
Charles Drucker oversees the management and reporting of the Institutional Research Unit's systemwide data on research contracts and grants, extramural funding and sponsorship of research, private support, and faculty and industry research profiles. He also works on data quality and validation issues to ensure the accuracy and consistency of source data from campuses and other external sources. Before joining UCOP in 2004, Charles worked in educational and technical publishing. He has a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Stanford University, and was a post-doctoral researcher at UC Berkeley. - Chris Furgiuele
Chris Furgiuele manages the UCOP Institutional Research Unit's data management, reporting, and analytic support activities in the areas of student financial support, graduate student enrollment and outcomes, enrollment planning, and instructional activity. He leads the unit's efforts to ensure quality data and timely reports to UCOP clients in these five content areas, and plays a key role in providing analytics that support the policy development and decision making of UCOP Executives. Chris's expertise includes project management, analysis of student enrollment and outcomes data, survey research, statistical programming, and database design. Prior to coming to UCOP in 2006, Chris worked as a project director at an Oakland-based public policy research consulting firm where he designed and managed outcome evaluations of education and welfare programs for state and federal agencies. - Jenna Allen
Jenna Allen works in the areas of information management, GIS mapping, and ad-hoc data collection, analysis and reporting. She is also involved in the development of a public access report repository for UCOP. Jenna came to the Institutional Research unit from the Office of Research and Graduate Studies where she managed a welfare-research database for the State of California. Before joining UCOP in 2005, she worked in public policy and conducted social science research at Temple University and at The Nature Conservancy. Jenna received her B.A. from Temple University in Geography and Urban Studies and her Masters in Public Policy at UCLA's School for Public Policy and Social Research. - Tongshan Chang
Tongshan Chang started as an admissions research and evaluation analyst in the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) in 2005. Prior to joining UCOP, he worked in the Institutional Research and Analysis at West Virginia University and the University of Kansas. His current role is to provide data analysis and reporting in the area of admissions and educational preparation programs. Tongshan has a doctorate in Higher Education Administration with a minor in Statistics from West Virginia University. He also has a master's degree in Computer Science. - Gema Fonseca
Gema Fonseca provides data management, analysis and reporting on student financial support, summer enrollment and staff/faculty personnel in the UC system. Before joining the Institutional Research department, Gema managed the corporate student financial aid database in the UCOP Student Affairs department. She also has extensive campus experience coordinating undergraduate scholarship programs at UC Berkeley. - Annette Holmes
Annette Holmes has over 22 years of experience with the University of California. Before joining the Institutional Research unit, Annette worked in Academic Planning and Budget, and prior to that she was in the Office of the Treasurer of The Regents. Her primary role is to provide data analysis and reporting in the areas of student data and faculty teaching activities. Annette received her B.A. in Humanities from Holy Names College. - Kathleen Merchant
Kathleen Merchant has worked at UC Office of the President for over 13 years in the areas of graduate and professional schools diversity and academic personnel in the Department of Academic Advancement. In the Institutional Research Office she will be working in the areas of academic personnel, graduate admissions, graduate and professional school diversity program data collection and analysis, and undergraduate admissions. - Ravinder Singh
Ravinder Singh is a research analyst in Institutional Research. He provides data analysis and reporting in the areas of undergraduate admissions, student registration and graduation, and K-12 educational partnerships. Ravinder has over 12 years of experience working in educational settings. He began working at the UC Office of the President in 2008 and previously worked for the Florida Department of Education, University of North Florida, and Florida State University. - Gregory Sykes
In his nearly 20 years of service in the University of California system, Gregory Sykes has experienced both campus and systemwide perspectives. An alumnus of UC Berkeley, Gregory worked at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco prior to transferring to the Office of the President in 2007, where his initial position was in the department of Academic Personnel. - Paula Zeszotarski
Paula Zeszotarski comes to Institutional Research from UCOP Student Affairs, where she served as the UC Undergraduate Experience Survey Project Manager. Paula brings over five years of experience in student outcomes assessment and survey methods. She has a B.A. in English Language and Literature from Yale University, an M.A. in English from Middlebury College, and Master of Library and Information Science from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from UCLA.
